Writing Prompt Story Starter: On Reflection

on reflection

On reflection. Still waters run deep. A drop in the ocean. Water under the bridge.

Water seems to have emotions all of its own, and perhaps that’s why we’re drawn to water.

When it’s calm it is beautiful, but the choppiness and unsettled aspect of it mirrors real life, too.

The photo above shows a tranquil harbour, the gateway to the sea.

Like most towns with a fishing and sea-faring heritage, there are not only stories, but tragedies too.

It’s hard to believe when you look at the calmness of the water and inviting cottages, but a picturesque setting can’t disguise a place that was once busy and integral to people’s livelihoods.

“The boat is safer anchored at the port; but that’s not the aim of boats.” — Paolo Coelho

What story inspirations can we take from the picture? Has someone decided to sell up and move to a small town? Have bricks and mortar lost their charm they’ve and they now want to live on a boat?

Perhaps we can look further back and someone is researching a sinking vessel, a mystery or are they tracking down a relative?

History and stories passed down from generation to generation make for the most interesting of tales. Perhaps, where there are boats there was once treasure? Fishing boats and sailors usually means strong characters and bravery.

The families waiting at home for the return of the boats and keeping an eye on the unpredictable weather.

Or could someone have bought one of the cottages as fresh start? Do they find something behind a wall? Do they discover letters, charts or a diary? Fishing towns seem to have more history and mysteries than most.
