Writer Of The Week: Katie Holloway

This week we’re chatting to debut author Katie Holloway, whose poignant story, “Back To You”, will be appearing in this week’s issue.

Tell us about your story “Back To You”.

“Back to You” is the story of a woman looking for something new, but unexpectedly comes across something, or rather, someone, ‘old’ – a boyfriend from her teenage years. She’s surprised by her own reaction, and that of those around her.

How long have you been writing fiction?

Apparently I’ve been making up stories since I was two! I studied Creative Writing at university, but then accidentally took a long break from writing fiction once I started working in publishing, and then was busier still when my children came along. Once my kids started school a few years ago, I found myself with a bit more time and headspace to start writing stories again.

Do you prefer writing stories filled with emotion?

I think whenever we’re writing about humans interacting with each other (which is 99% of fiction) there can’t help being emotions involved. How much these emotions come to the forefront will depend on who the characters are. I tend to prefer both reading and writing stories where situations aren’t black-and-white, where characters have to wrestle with their feelings a bit.

Who are some of your favourite authors?

I’ve always loved the charm of L. M. Montgomery, the wit of Jane Austen and the drama of the Bronte sisters. But I also enjoy contemporary writers such as Maggie O’Farrell and Janette Oke.

What made you submit a story to the “Friend”?

When I first got back into fiction writing, I was delving into flash fiction, as that’s what I had time for then. But more recently I’ve been enjoying writing (and reading) longer, gentler stories with real heart to them – which is exactly what the “Friend” specialises in!

What are your future writing plans?

Hopefully more stories for “The People’s Friend”! I’m also on the lookout for a publisher for the novella-in-flash that I wrote a couple of years ago, with thanks to a grant from the Arts Council England, as well as working on a non-fiction project with a Christian publisher. I like to keep busy with different things going on at once!

Thank you, Katie!
