Writer Of The Week: Becky Dickinson

We have a chat with “Friend” debut author Becky Dickinson whose story “Capture Every Moment” appears in our fabulous new look issue.

Tell us about your story, “Capture Every Moment”?

My story, “Capture Every Moment”, is about three sisters and their mum. I’m interested in families and relationships, and the often unspoken emotions at the heart of those relationships. I won’t give the rest away.

Where did the inspiration come from?

My own mum was always taking photographs, and as children, my siblings and I used to find it really annoying having to sit still while she fiddled about with her old camera. We just wanted to run about. But now that I have children of my own, I can see why it was important to her to capture those moments in the present which became moments in the past. Of course, it’s different now with phones, but there was something special about getting those photographs back in the post and seeing them for the first time.

How long have you been writing fiction?

Not very long! I was made redundant in May 2023 and wrote my first short story shortly afterwards as I was panicking about needing to earn some money while figuring out my next move. Luckily, it was bought by a magazine which inspired me to write some more. I’ve always wanted to write fiction, I just took a long time to start.

Who are some of your favourite authors?

So many. Off the top of my head: Margaret Atwood, Maggie O’Farrell, Ian McEwan, Heather Morris. Can I have favourite books too? These would include: “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine “(I wish Gail Honeyman would write another one!) “Educated, The Girl With the Louding Voice” and “American Dirt”. I’m currently reading “A Little Life “by Hanya Yanagihara.

What are your future writing plans?

I would love to write a novel.

What advice would you give to people trying to have a story published in the “Friend”?

Just write. Don’t wait. Believe in yourself. This is advice I need to give myself too!
