Poetry Update

A round-up of what’s happening in the world of The People’s Friend poetry!

Thanks for all your contributions

Back in April, we asked for new poetry contributions from both new and established authors. We’d just like to take a moment to say THANK YOU to everyone who sent in work for our consideration – we’ve had an amazing response!

We’re already featuring new poets

Following our appeal for new poetry, new poetry writers have already begun to feature in the ‘Friend’. Sue Pemberton’s lovely poem ‘Out Of Mallaig’ appeared in our July 21 issue, BJ Fairweather’s summery ‘Domestic Bliss’ in August 4, and Rosemary Gemmell’s beautiful ‘Portrait Of A Girl’ appears in the current issue. Look out for new contributors to the poetry in our Specials soon, too – we plan to feature all-new poets in a forthcoming Special.

Established poets mean a lot to us

As we approach our 150th Anniversary, we’re mindful of how much ‘Friend’ poetry means to our readers, whether it’s gentle, reflective, or laugh-out-loud funny! We’re delighted to be able to encourage new poets to send in their work – especially as there aren’t too many magazines publishing poetry these days. Our well-loved, established poets’ work means a great deal to our readers – so it means a lot to us, too. Your contributions are always welcome.

A reminder before you make a submission

Whether you’re sending us poetry or fiction, please never send us the only copy, lest it should go astray in the post! Always keep a copy, and take a note of the date you sent it in. If you’d like your work returned, please enclose an SAE. And if you’d like an acknowledgement that your work has been safely received, please pop a stamped, self-addressed postcard in your envelope, with ‘(Title of work) Received’, and we’ll return this to you.

The Friendship Book, The Fireside Book and the Annual

We’re always happy to consider poetry for our three annual publications, The Friendship Book, The Fireside Book and the People’s Friend Annual. We’re in the process of revamping the Poetry Guidelines to include these lovely little books – keep an eye out for more info on this soon. Copies of our 2019 annuals can be found at www.dcthomsonshop.co.uk.
