We have chat to poet and writer Dawn Lawrence whose poetry appears in our current “Fireside Book”.
How long have you been writing poetry?
I have been writing since my school days, in one way or another.
Where do you get your inspiration?
The topics I was interested in, mainly related to nature, and these were often hilarious incidents involving my pets. Essay writing at school was my favourite lesson; I often wrote verses for my classmates to make them laugh!
Who are some of your favourite poets?
Some of my many poetry books which come to mind, include; Alfred Noyes, John Masefield, Christinia Rossetti, Henry Van Dyke, Melfin Jones, Nora Bomford … And I could go on and on!
What other writing do you enjoy?
A few of my favourite writers include; Charles De Lint, Canadian author of a form of North American folk and fantasy literature; Michelle Paver, who writes of a haunted world of the past which held wild animals and the tales associated with them, and Mary Patchett, Australian author, who writes of the wild dingoes of the Australian bush.
What are your future writing plans?
Apart from my book on endangered wildlife, I have written ten others, not related, and do not intend to add to these. However, I aim to continue my work as a speaker composing lectures on conservation relating to wildlife species on behalf of the Born Free Foundation, Co-founder Dame Virginia McKenna OBE.
What advice would you give someone hoping to be published in the “Friend”?
For anyone interested in contributing to “The People’s Friend”, I would recommend choosing a subject with a wide appeal relating to everyday life, such as humorous incidents that occur at home or away, or on the subject of nature which could include moments of inspiration or a sense of fun!
