Hello! And a very warm welcome to this week’s fiction sneak peek.

Seven Short Stories

Our opening story is Moira Gee’s “Room To Grow”. While out on a countryside walk, one mum reflects on her relationship with her parents. Artwork by Mandy Dixon (above).

Tanino’s terrible timekeeping threatens to make Melina late, in “Get Me To The Church On Time”! By Stefania Hartley, with artwork from Jim Dewar.

Carol tags along to a book group with her friend, Julia – but her heart isn’t quite into the evening’s book review. “In The Bad Books” is by Kate Worthington.

In Joanne Duncan’s “My Mum Says”, Jeanie knows her friend’s heart is in the right place – even if she is a bit of a gossip! Illustrated by Sailesh Thakrar.

Teresa Ashby’s “Partners In Grime” is next, and Helena hadn’t expected to find a kindred spirit in her new boss. Artwork from Andre Leonard.

Can two sisters with very different ideas about colour, compromise? “Out Of The Shade” by Sara Partington is illustrated by Sarah Holliday.

In our final story this week, university life isn’t at all how Rae had imagined it. “Get Real!”, by Alison Carter, features artwork by Jim Dewar.

Serials

A new three-part serial begins today – Pamela Ormondroyd’s “Sisters In Arms”. We’re in 1926 and three sisters have very different hopes for the future. Artwork from Sailesh Thakrar.

In Part Three of Ginny Swart’s “Hannah’s House”, there might be more to Hannah’s neighbours than met the eye. Illustrations by Ged Fay.

Look out for a new serial beginning next week.

Series

Two weddings in one day is not something to be repeated, in Jan Snook’s “Wedding Designs”…

…while in Glenda Young’s “Riverside”, there’s a special surprise ready for Ruby’s birthday. But what is it?

Lucy Crichton

Better known as “Fiction Editor Lucy”, I am always on the look-out for the very best short stories, poems and pocket novels. As well as sourcing enjoyable content, I enjoy working with our established contributors, encouraging new talent, and celebrating 155 years of “Friend” fiction!
