Features Sneak Peek: September 1, 2018 issue

Ah, the seaside sparkle of Blackpool! Our cover this week is a classic shot of the Lancashire resort.

I visited a few times when I was growing up – it never seemed like part of Britain, it always felt a bit more exotic – but then I was probably buzzing from all the rock I’d eaten!

Inside this week I’m also taking a little look at the work that went into producing our 150th Anniversary Edition. It’s on pre-sale now, and is released to the world on September 5th.

It was a true labour of love! Week in, week out, we went to and from our Archives department digging out fascinating nuggets from our back issues to bring together, and we really hope you enjoy travelling back through time with us as we look at the way the world and the magazine has changed over the years.

Over in the cookery, Marion’s put together some simple, hearty meals for weekends, while Barry Cashin looks at whether it’s worth getting a smart meter installed in your home.

Dawn Geddes is writing about an organisation called Beauty Banks for us, who are working to end hygiene poverty – where people can’t afford basics like deodorant, toothpaste and razors.

Meanwhile, Alexandra Campbell is explaining why September is the perfect time of year to move any plants you want relocated, and offering tips on jazzing up your garden bench!

Liz’s knit this week is a very pretty casual tunic.

And as the nights are drawing in (boo!), we’re running a competition to win 1 of 5 Lumie Bodyclocks – which wake you up naturally with an imitation sunrise during the winter months. Some people swear by them, and they’re certainly a lot more pleasant than waking up in the dark depths of a January morning…
