Neil McAllister delights in the hospitality of perfect Painswick, in the October 8, 2022 issue of “The People’s Friend”.
The unspoilt town is roughly the halfway point of the Cotswold Way walk, where King Charles, upon surveying the view from Painswick Beacon, declared that it could be paradise.
It’s little wonder that Neil has such a soft spot for the area. Join him as he takes in the local Georgian architecture and finds himself charmed by the Painswick Pooch Coffee House. As the name suggests, it is dog friendly and even serves doggy ice-cream.
We’ll also visit St Marys churchyard, which is world famous. There we’ll chat to artist Greg Thatcher who likes to spend a number of weeks each year drawing and painting the churchyard.
After visiting this area, you yourself may find yourself making return visits as well!
British Orchards
Research by the National Trust reveals that the area of England and Wales covered by orchards has halved since the early 1900s. This has resulted in huge losses in habitat for nature, fewer heritage fruits, and less spring blossom.
The National Trust is driving action for change, creating new orchards and planting four million blossoming fruit trees. This is part of its commitment to plant and establish 20 million trees across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland by 2030.
Susie Kearley finds out about the important work the National Trust is doing to create and protect British orchards.
Something’s Brewing
In good times and bad, there’s one drink that always hits the spot, whether it’s a builder’s brew to begin the day or a pot of fragrant Earl Grey when we’re feeling a little more la-di-da.
Served piping hot to warm our bones, iced to quench summertime thirst, or laden with sugar to soothe shock, the punchline is the same after every blissful sip: “Aah, that’s better.”
Laura Brown immerses herself in the history of one of Britain’s favourite beverages.
Vale Pantry
Food poverty in the UK is a big issue, so Carole Jones decided to do something positive about it by setting up a social supermarket.
The Vale Pantry, in the town of Sturminster Newton, helps those struggling to afford food.
Gilly Pickup chats to Carole in the magazine to find out how her social enterprise is tackling food poverty.
