Morag Fleming goes off the beaten track to explore the magical woodland of Galloway Forest, in the March 11, 2023 issue of “The People’s Friend”.

Galloway Forest Park is one of Scotland’s secrets, hidden away in plain sight.

Dumfries and Galloway has a lot of coast, with peninsulas such as the Rhins and the Machars. In addition to that, it also has harbour towns like Kirkcudbright and Annan, deep estuaries and celebrated shorelines such as the Solway coast.

Join Morag as she explores the area. From kings to faeries to rare birds of prey, Galloway Forest Park is full of fascinating sights and lots of wonderful viewpoints to enjoy the great outdoors. Discover more in the magazine.

Tribute To Audrey Hepburn

Gregory Peck called himself “the luckiest man in the world” for starring with Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday“.

He described the elfin actress as “One of the most loved, most skilful, most intelligent, sensitive, charming actresses and friends in my life”.

It was Gregory who insisted the previously unknown Audrey share screen billing instead of being listed on the posters as Introducing . . .

He could tell how big a star she would become. Seventy years after “Roman Holiday”, Douglas McPherson remembers the career of a 20th-century screen ic0n.

It’s something we do so many times a day that we don’t even think about it.

But what if you couldn’t just turn on a tap to get the fresh water you need? That’s the plight many face in poor African countries.

It touched the heart of Wiltshire man Nigel Linacre, who set up the charity WellBoring in 2011.

As the name suggests, it drills bore holes to produce safe, fresh drinking water.

Bill Gibb chats to Nigel to find out more about how his charity’s vital work is providing the very basic of needs.

Jasmine Harrison

During the summer of 2022, Jasmine Harrison swam 900 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Jasmine, from Thirsk in North Yorkshire, has swum competitively for many years, both in the pool and outdoors, but this challenge required specific endurance training. However, it was all for a very worthwhile cause. Well, two good causes, in fact. Jasmine raised around £5,000 for two sea environmental charities, Surfers Against Sewage and Sea Shepherd UK.

It wasn’t all plain sailing, with bad weather and other factors to contend with. Sally Jenkins catches up with Jasmine to learn more about her challenge.

Elsewhere, we have a selection of delicious breakfast recipes, and a knitting pattern to make a sporty tank top.
