Editor’s Diary: Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn

Field of sunflowers

In this week’s Editor’s Diary, it feels like time to say “hello autumn”.

Every year I am taken by surprise by how quickly the season changes.

Just a few weeks ago, I was photographing this glorious field of sunflowers near Perth. Isn’t it beautiful?

Now, I’m putting on an extra layer of clothes and picking cooking apples to turn into a crumble!

The hedgerows are brimming with brambles and rosehips, and the nights are drawing in.

Yes, summer is definitely over.

A beautiful time of year

I have mixed feelings about autumn. It’s a beautiful time of year, all golden and softly lit.

But it also signals that winter isn’t far away, and on the east coast of Scotland, winter can be harsh.

I’m already preparing for colder weather. My washing line yesterday was filled with woollen socks and cosy blankets.

I even washed my slipper boots! I can’t do without them when it gets really chilly.

My eating habits change, too, once summer has departed. Salads are ditched in favour of casseroles and stews. And I find myself craving hot puddings and custard!

I also have the urge to make jam from all that bountiful harvest of fruit.

Time to look out my scarf and gloves, I think . . .
