Being An Auntie For The First Time Ever

Lisa's new nephew, Louis

May 8 of this year was a very special day for me. It was the day my gorgeous nephew was born, and I’m so excited to be an auntie.

Beautiful Louis Alexander Speck finally arrived – two weeks late! – in the early hours of that Sunday morning.

However, I should point out that while Louis was overdue, his timing is still impeccable. His due date was Saturday, April 23, but when he was born, the song being played was called “One Sunday Morning” by Wilco! How apt!

I’m already a mum to two-year-old Isla but being an auntie for the first time, I can’t get enough of the new addition to our family. As for wee Isla, she’s not so sure about her new cousin yet! She’ll get there. She might not have cuddled Louis yet but she loves seeing photos and videos of him. Maybe she’ll be brave enough to cuddle him the next time we visit…

Regular Updates

We live in Dundee which means we can’t just nip in for a cuddle and a cuppa as much as we’d like. However, with the wonders of modern technology – thank you, WhatsApp and Zoom! – we can get regular updates on how Louis is getting on.

Although catching up via laptop or on a mobile-phone screen is not the same thing as seeing Louis in person, I’m thankful that I’m able to see all the photographs that come our way. And there are quite a few!

Special Memories

Unlike Isla who had to spend a few days in hospital due to feeding problems, Louis is a little grubber and loves eating. It’s almost all he does. If he’s awake, he’ll almost certainly be eating!

Born weighing 8 pounds and 13 ounces, he had already gone up to 11 pounds 8 ounces at his most recent health-visitor appointment. It’s safe to say this wee man has a healthy appetite!

I can’t wait to make some special memories with Louis and Isla as they grow up.

I love being a mummy to Isla but I’m going to love being an auntie to wee Louis, too. If I can be half as good as an auntie to him as my sister is to Isla, I’ll be doing a fantastic job.
