“I don’t understand why you don’t want to ring your sister.”
Daniel shook his head slowly as he glanced at Kerry in befuddlement.
Kerry couldn’t explain it; it didn’t make much sense, even to her.
She was 20 weeks along now, and they’d just had a scan to check that everything was all right, which it thankfully was. They’d even found out what they were having – a girl.
Of course she should want to share her news with Grace. Admittedly, she’d always been a fairly reticent person, but she and Grace were close, weren’t they?
It had been nearly four months since Grace had left for New York, and Kerry had only communicated with her a handful of times – one Skype session early on, with her parents, and then a couple of sporadic texts.
Kerry had always meant to call or e-mail, yet somehow the days and weeks had slipped by without either of them talking or texting.
And now the news that she was pregnant, halfway through her pregnancy, felt too momentous to mention offhand.
“Oh, by the way . . .”
How would Grace react? Would she be hurt that Kerry hadn’t said anything earlier? Far worse, would she not care?
“It’s not that I don’t want to ring her,” Kerry said slowly. “It’s just that so much has been going on, and it feels strange to have left it so long.”
She gave a grimace of apology, along with a shrug.
“I know that probably sounds daft.”
“Only because this is Grace we’re talking about, and I know she’ll be thrilled whenever you tell her.”
Daniel sighed.
“You do realise you’re going to have to tell her some time, don’t you?”
He gestured towards her burgeoning bump.
“It’s going to become rather obvious.”
“I know that. But she’s not coming home till Christmas.”
Kerry half-wondered if Grace would even come home then. She seemed so busy; too busy to talk or text. But then, she could have made the effort, too.
“I’ll ring her today,” Kerry promised.
“Don’t do it for my sake, Kerry,” Daniel answered. “Do it for yours.”
He drew her into his arms and gave her a quick kiss.
“I must dash. It’s getting on.”
“Yes.” Kerry glanced at the clock.
It was seven in the morning, and she needed to get on with her work day, as well. With the time difference, Grace wouldn’t be up for hours, but perhaps Kerry would try ringing her at lunchtime.
