Thomas had just visited the Parrys’ home.
He thought Jennet looked upset – as well she might, given what he had just heard.
“Jennet, I called in to see your papa. He told me what has happened.
“Your mama said you had some idea of negotiating help. Have you had any success?”
Jennet’s face crumpled.
“Oh, Thomas!” The words came out in gulping gasps.“I’ve been so foolish!”
He took her hand and guided her to the side of the road, and offered her a kerchief from his jerkin pocket.
“Here. Mop your tears and tell me.”
“I’ve been seeing Anthony Venables and –”
“Yes, I know. Let me guess the rest. You approached him for help over his sire’s action and he refused it,” Thomas declared.
She nodded, looking so woebegone that Thomas wanted to take her in his arms and tell her that everything would be all right.
He could do no such thing, of course. It would be taking advantage of her distress.
She could never be his, and nothing he could do or say would make her situation any better.
She dabbed her wet cheeks, sniffing.
“I believed he would be sympathetic. I am a fool.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No, just inexperienced in the ways of the world.”
“He was an obsession, but I have learned my lesson. I shall never let that happen again.
“From now on it is going to be family and work. Somehow, I have to find us a place to live and the means of paying for it.”
They both knew how hard such an action would be.
Reynard Venables faced his bailiff across the carved oak desk of his study.
“You have carried out my instruction?”
“I have, sir. Seven days to leave the premises. Ned Parry will not work again.”
“He was a troublemaker and stubborn with it. I cannot say I am sorry to be rid, good worker though he was. What of the girl?”
“She was absent, sir. As was the grandmother.”
“Ah. I have no argument with Goodwife Parry. She is an asset to the town.
“Nor can I put blame at Mistress Parry’s feet. The girl is another matter.
“There is a streak of her father in her that warrants observation. Anything you hear, report back to me.”
“Aye, sir.”
“That will be all,” Venables declared. “Tell my son I would speak with him.”
“I believe Master Anthony went with Mistress Honoria to look at a new mount. They should be back by now.
“If I might be so bold, sir.”
About to turn his attention to the papers on his desk, Venables halted.
“Well, what is it, man?”
“I am told there is a young woman from the herb gatherers encampment who can work miracles with an ailing animal. She has the Touch.
“Tes a gift, sir. Should anything go amiss with the palfrey, the lass might be the one to approach.”
“My thanks. I shall bear it in mind.”
The bailiff sketched a bow and retreated.
