The next evening, the pub was buzzing. It was Sunday, and that meant it was quiz night.
Rachel sat at a table with the rest of her team.
Her blonde hair was shining and she’d put on her favourite glittery jumper over her jeans.
Usually she’d be looking forward to the evening.
Tonight, however, she was distracted. The conversation she’d had with her daughter before she came out had thrown her.
Of course, she knew Sophie was old enough to date. She didn’t want to be over-protective or interfering, but she was worried. Why did it have to be Ollie Foster?
Rachel knew all about the incident with the police. Surely her daughter could have chosen someone else?
She sighed. Of course, she didn’t know the boy like Sophie did, but she couldn’t help but worry.
She knew that she had no choice. Sophie must make her own decisions. She would have to trust her daughter’s judgement.
“Are you all right?”
Rachel turned towards Neil and noticed for the first time that he was staring at her, a concerned expression on his face.
“Oh, yes, thank you.” She shook herself and smiled.
“Are you sure? It’s just that you seem distracted.”
“No, no. I’m fine.”
He looked as if he was about to say something more, but at that moment, Brad announced that it was time for the quiz.
“OK, everyone, are you ready?” Dawn grinned at the team. “It’s time to beat those Master Minds.”
“Hear, hear!” Graham agreed.
Rachel took a sip of her drink and tried to concentrate.
To begin with, they did very well. Neil was on form, and Graham got every one of the sports questions.
“What a shame my pupils aren’t here to see this,” he joked. “I always tell them that teachers know everything.”
“Does that mean you’ll know all the answers on the other subjects, too?” Dawn chuckled, digging him in the ribs.
Graham grimaced.
“Perhaps not, but it’s television programmes next, and that’s yours and Rachel’s department.”
They started well. They both knew the first five answers, and then Dawn’s favourite show, “Game Of Thrones”, came up.
At that point, Rachel felt her thoughts drifting away once more.
What if Ollie led Sophie astray? Would she be safe? Would she get into trouble with the police, too?
“Rachel, Rachel. You must know this one.” Dawn looked at her expectantly.
“Sorry, what was the question?”
“Who was in the final of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ last year?”
Rachel frowned. She did know the answer, but she couldn’t think of it.
She and Sophie had watched every episode. What was the matter with her?
“Time’s up,” Brad announced. “Hand in your sheets!”
Rachel groaned.
“I’m so sorry. I do know it. I’ve got a mental block.”
“It’s fine.” Neil patted her arm. “It doesn’t matter. We’re doing well and there are two rounds to go.”
“Yes,” Dawn reassured her. “We all have moments when the answer’s on the tip of our tongues.
“Let me get you another drink.”
Rachel smiled. They were a great team.
