Darkest Before Dawn Episode 05
On the day of Edward and Tilly’s wedding, Maud helped Tilly get ready while Edward spent the day at his best friend’s house in the next street.
She’d made the dress herself and Tilly looked absolutely beautiful in it, her blonde hair framing her pretty face.
Isobel had come home from work with pearl buttons and some lace, which Maud used to make the dress extra special.
Everyone else had left for the church – even Alf, who was to give Tilly away.
Maud heard a car pull up outside, then the front door opened.
“You there, Maud? I’ve brought someone along. I hope that’s all right.”
She smiled at the sound of her sister-in-law’s voice.
Rose absolutely never brought anyone home!
“Come in, Rose.”
Rose’s face lit up at the sight of Tilly, and Maud thought how smart Rose looked in her tailored plum-coloured suit.
“Don’t you look stunning?” Rose gushed. “That dress is fabulous.
“Did you make it, Maud? Of course you did. I can see by the neat workmanship.”
“Who have you brought along, Rose?”
“Doctor Kirby. James,” Rose replied. “Now don’t you go getting any ideas, Maud. He’s just a friend.”
“But he’s come all the way from London with you?”
“He drove me, actually,” Rose said with a smile.
“He needed to see someone here anyway so decided to kill two birds.
“My nephew is certainly a lucky chap. Any news on when he goes away?”
“We’re not talking about that,” Maud told her. “But it’s soon.”
Rose pressed her finger to her lips, which were almost the same colour as her suit.
“Doctor Kirby said he’d drive you to the church, Tilly.”
“Really? That is so kind. Thank you.”
Maud loved the way Tilly was so delighted about everything. Offer her a second cup of tea from the pot and she acted as if you’d given her the crown jewels.
“A cup of tea before we go?” Maud asked.
“I would love one. I’m gasping,” Rose admitted.
Maud hurried downstairs and saw the doctor standing in the sitting-room, looking at the family photos on the sideboard.
