Darkest Before Dawn Episode 25
“John’s here, Isobel!” Sidney shouted up the stairs.
“Ask him to come in,” Isobel called back.
“I already have,” Sidney said, before tutting loudly. “Ma! John’s here.”
Isobel finished getting ready and dabbed a spot of Maud’s perfume behind her ears.
It was for John’s benefit.
“Why don’t you ever wear perfume?” he’d asked the last time they went out together. “You smell of potatoes.”
“Why, thank you for the compliment, John.” Isobel had laughed, but she hadn’t found it funny and was only laughing to hide her dismay.
She’d found his remark hurtful on a day when she’d worked so hard picking potatoes that her back was killing her.
She went downstairs and heard John chatting with her family.
He’d always been close to them, and it was as if he were just as much a part of the family now as Tilly was.
“I’m ready,” she said. “We’re just going for a walk. We won’t be long.”
“Why don’t you go dancing?” Maud suggested. “There’s a do on at the King George.”
Oh, how Isobel would have loved to go dancing!
She knew all about the dance tonight, and that an excellent band would be playing.
“I can’t dance,” John explained, tapping his walking stick, which he now used instead of the crutches.
“You could go along to watch,” Maud replied, “and listen to the music.”
“Perhaps another time,” John said, and held his arm out for Isobel to take.
They stepped outside into the early evening sunshine.
