Editor’s Diary: Counting Down To Alvaston

Alvaston

With our fabulous “Friend” 150th birthday weekend at Alvaston Hall Hotel just around the corner, last week was all about preparation.

A lot of work goes on behind the scenes ahead of this sort of event!

Lucy, Alan, Jacki, Margaret and I were the lucky people heading to Alvaston Hall Hotel . To make sure everything was ready, we spent a lot of time in our basement storeroom!

We had dozens of boxes to label and sort ready for shipping down to Cheshire. We were taking books, magazines and gifts for the goody bags; shortbread and Dundee Cake for the “Tea With The Editor” session; craft supplies for the crafting corner; pop-up banners; our “Friend” photo peep board . . . and lots of tea towels!

We also had a “Friend” quiz to compile, complete with picture round. Plus I had a speech to write for my own session, as well as an introduction for the “authors in conversation” session.

Last but not least, we held a practice craft session. With two workshops planned for the weekend, we had to be sure we knew how to make the items.

This, I must confess, is not one of my strengths! Luckily the other members of the team proved to be far more competent than me.

I was happy my role on the day would be confined to handing out the scissors and glue . . .
