Editor’s Diary: Back From My Break

editors diary

As regular readers of my Editor’s Diary know, I’ve recently had a fortnight’s holiday.

It seemed an odd idea at first — taking a long break from work when we’re still so restricted in what we can do.

But it turned out to be one of the best holidays I’ve ever had. And I never went further than five miles from my front door!

Every day, Mr Editor and I had a long walk in and around our local area. Even though we have lived here for over 25 years, we found lots of new things to see and do.

It made me feel quite ashamed I hadn’t explored my home patch sooner . . . We have definitely been too quick to jump in the car in the past.

It was lovely to strike out on foot and really get to know the area around my home.

Just like on any holiday, I took lots of photos. I took the one above, with ox-eye daisies in the foreground, on a gorgeous sunny day.

And this view of the River Earn shows a tiny and romantic fishing bothy I didn’t even know existed!

It was just as well I did plenty walking, because I also spent a lot of time cooking, baking — and eating!

It was bliss to have time to spend trying out new recipes, such as this utterly delicious Génoise sponge with summer berries.

I read several brilliant books, too, including the fabulous “Blood & Sugar”, which Tracey from the Fiction team reviewed recently.

And I watched some really good films, including “Mrs Lowry And Son”, starring Timothy Spall and Vanessa Redgrave, about the artist L.S. Lowry.

So my lockdown holiday was a great success, and one of the most relaxing breaks I’ve ever had!
