“The People’s Friend” was delighted to receive a special congratulatory message from Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousaf, to mark the 8,000th issue this week.

Mr Yousaf said, “For generations, ‘The People’s Friend’ has provided its loyal readership with warm comfort through the golden years, and the most trying times, of Scotland’s modern history.”

The politician talked about our eye-catching covers and content as well as celebrating how it is a “much-loved Scottish institution” in his anniversary wishes.

He added, “With each weekly edition beautifully decorated with the dazzling, watercolour garland of the mysterious J. Campbell Kerr, ‘The Friend’ is an easy spot on the shelf of any newsagent.

“For many, the ever-changing canvas of the famous front cover, that proudly displays the rich heritage of these islands, is what first drew them into a lifetime of readership.

The famous story magazine has become a much-loved Scottish institution, weaving its yarn deeply within Scotland’s cultural tartan tapestry forever.

The First Minister also spoke about the international appeal of the title, that was launched in Dundee in 1869 and continues to be produced in the Scottish city.

“The stories found within each edition are shared and remembered the world over,” he said.

“So, as we mark the 8,000th edition of ‘The People’s Friend’, let the remarkable longevity of the magazine that spans three centuries not go unnoticed.

“And remember that in the fast moving, and often unpredictable world, in which we live – we should enjoy the moments which remain constant.”

A Word From The Editor

Editor, Stuart Johnstone has been planning the milestone 8000th edition for months. He says, “Overseeing the 8000th issue of this iconic magazine is a very proud moment for me as an Editor. ‘The People’s Friend’ has been an important part of millions of people’s lives over the decades, and indeed generations, and this edition is a fond look back at just a few of the many highlights we have enjoyed in years gone by.

“Of course, as well as looking back, we are also looking ahead. Next year is the 155th anniversary of the “Friend” and we have some very exciting plans to celebrate. Watch this space!”
