The Story Of Our Celebration Cake

Marion explains the inspiration behind our 150th Celebration Cake, which appeared in the January 12 Souvenir Issue.

An anniversary such as this deserves a very special celebration cake. It needs to reflect the magazine and its birthplace, and of course it must be delicious!

Karen Burns-Booth, of popular food blog www.lavenderandlovage.com, has been involved with a number of successful projects for the “Friend”, including our very popular vintage recipe selections from World War I. She was delighted to put her talents to work again to develop a special occasion cake to remember.

Dundee Cake and Dundee Marmalade

Taking inspiration from local delicacies Dundee cake and Dundee marmalade, and from Scotland’s famous whiskies, Karen has created a Whisky, Sultana and Orange Cake.

Yellow Roses

A light fruit cake containing whisky-soaked fruit and tangy Dundee marmalade, it’s layered together with whisky and orange cream and decorated with yellow roses, for friendship.

Famous Grouse

The ingredients also reflect those featured in many of the recipes “Friend” readers have enjoyed over the years. Even our ever-popular Scottish scenic and nature features are represented in the Famous Grouse whisky that flavours the fruit!
