Editor’s Diary: Going Out

The big news in this week’s Editor’s Diary is that I’ve had a night out!

Two years ago, that would hardly have been something remarkable to shout about. Oh, how times have changed!

The occasion was a concert at a small venue about half an hour’s drive from home. It was originally scheduled for this time last year. But, of course, that didn’t happen.

It felt a little strange, but mainly very exciting, to be in a music venue again.

You can play as much music as you like at home, but nothing beats the live experience. It’s completely immersive. And the enjoyment is heightened by being part of an appreciative audience, all swept along by the performance.

It reminded me of how much I’ve missed these occasions.

Perhaps emboldened by the success of my night out, I have also been to Edinburgh!

I used to visit my favourite city regularly, but haven’t been since the first lockdown way back in March last year.

The mission? A long-delayed shopping trip to a certain Scandinavian furniture superstore.

I’m not a big fan of shopping or giant retail parks, but even this felt like something to celebrate. Every tiny piece of returning normality is to be treasured.

And it was reassuring to see that, on both occasions, everyone was wearing masks and using the hand sanitisers.

These small gestures of thoughtfulness for the wellbeing of others are appreciated more now than ever.
