Angela typed this week’s Editor’s Diary has been typed with freezing fingers . . .
Have you ever seen the 2006 movie “The Devil Wears Prada“?
Set in the American offices of a high-fashion magazine, it stars Meryl Streep as the wickedly demanding Editor-in-Chief.
It absolutely oozes glamour and style. And it bears no relation whatsoever to my own experiences as a magazine editor!
Not that there haven’t been glamorous occasions in the past . . . But this year, working from home has put paid to any of that.
I have a whole wardrobe full of smarter work clothes that haven’t been off their hangers since March. “Proper” shoes that have been abandoned in favour of slippers and sturdy walking shoes.
Comfort and practicality are the watchwords now.
And, increasingly, warmth!
Winter is closing in on the east coast of Scotland. The icy wind finds its way through every crack and crevice in the old stone walls of my house.
Glamour is the last thing on my mind!
It’s amazing how cold you can get when you sit still for long periods of time, working away at a keyboard.
These days, my home-working “uniform” of jeans and cosy jumper is supplemented by an array of warmer layers. Fingerless mittens, slipper boots, a fleecy wrap to ward off the draughts . . . And my favourite purchase of the year: an eight-pair pack of thermal wool socks!
One perk of working from home, though, is being able to whip up a cup of real hot chocolate made with milk.
It’s the perfect afternoon treat when the rain is hosing down!
And, of course, there’s always an obliging cat happy to warm my lap . . .
