Editor’s Diary: Comings And Goings

Editors Diary

In this week’s Editor’s Diary, I’ve been thinking about the team here at the “Friend”.

We’re generally pretty settled — most of us have been working together for years.

I’m proud of that fact; it means people must enjoy their jobs and get on well with their colleagues!

But every now and then, we say farewell to a much-loved colleague who’s decided to move on to pastures new.

Of course we’re always sad to see them go, but the upside is the excitement of adding a new person to the team. That’s good for all of us.

This time, it’s Illustrations Editor Sarah who’s setting off on a new adventure. So most of this week for me was taken up with the recruitment process . . .

Fiction Ed Shirley and I were lucky enough to have several really strong candidates to interview. I’m delighted that shortly we’ll be welcoming Manon to the “Friend” team.

You’ll be able to find out more about her soon.

Other than that, the week was a blur of different tasks. Everything from finalising the design of a special bag for Special 181 (which will include our popular 15-month diary) to a meeting with the Production Team, kept me busy.

Friday Facebook Live

All of a sudden, it was Friday again, and time for Facebook Live.

Just in case you don’t know, this is a weekly live broadcast over on our Facebook page, where members of the “Friend” team talk about things that have caught our attention in the past week.

Digital Ed Iain had the bright idea of going on location to a nearby bookshop for a special discussion. Our theme was the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, and we were going to talk about the “Friend” in the war years.

Unfortunately, the technology had other ideas!

But we still managed to have a good chat, even though the signal disappeared halfway through.

And there are worse places to spend a Friday morning than a bookshop!
