Brian Cox Helps Put Dundee On The Map

We were pleased to see that Dundee-born actor Brian Cox picked up a Golden Globe award last night.

He was named “Best Actor In A Drama Series” for his role in “Succession”, an HBO comedy-drama following the fortunes and power struggles of the wealthy Roy family.

His character in the show, Logan Roy, was born in Dundee — just like Brian. An episode was actually filmed here early last year, depicting something of a bittersweet homecoming.

We certainly spotted plenty of familiar locations. Plenty of local people pop up as extras, too!

All the publicity has really helped raise the city’s profile.

But this is just one of the exciting things to have happened in these parts over the past year or so.

“Traces”, a new suspense-filled crime drama from Fife author Val McDermid, was set and filmed here, too.

Starring “Line Of Duty” actor Martin Compston, it proved to be a huge hit. Even if he opted not to try the distinctive Dundee accent!

Mary Quant In Dundee

And, of course, the V&A Dundee opened to critical acclaim towards the end of 2018.

It’s a museum that aims to investigate the history of design, but also its future — in a uniquely Scottish context.

For example, the current exhibition is all about robots and artificial intelligence, while in April this year it will host an exhibition on iconic fashion designer Mary Quant.

In fact, they recently asked for pictures of Mary Quant clothing to include in their showcase, and visitors will be able to spot our Margaret’s scarf up there with the rest!

We’ve always known Dundee was a special place. But it’s great to see so many more people discover it — thanks to everything from scarves to big screen stars like Brian Cox!

If you’ve been planning a visit, 2020 is definitely the time!
