Willie’s View: Coronation Big Lunch

It couldn’t have turned out a better day for the Coronation Big Lunch Celebrations at Carnbo…

Dry, sunny and warm – what more could we have hoped for after such a cold start to May.

With the barbecue and pizza ovens fired up; the Community Hall filled with salads and puddings to die for; the gazebos erected and decked with flags, flowers and bunting and the local band “The Jammers” all tuned up and raring to go; everything was in place to build upon the excitement of the previous day’s Coronation of King Charles III.

Carnbo, of course, had an extra reason for celebration

Carnbo had  just won runner-up finalist in the Eden Project Coronation Big Lunch awards for the Friendliest Community in the UK.  Not bad for a wee village tucked beneath the Ochil Hills in Kinross-shire considering they were up against more than 500 nominations from across the whole of the UK. Congratulations to the winners in Bewdley, West Midlands.

The village has always had a strong, inclusive, community spirit. During last year’s celebrations for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the honour of cutting the cake fell to the oldest member of the community.  Recently, for King Charles, that honour was given to the youngest member – baby Andrew. At just ten weeks old, admittedly wee Andrew did need to call on a little help from his mum and dad. Andrew himself seemed quite oblivious to all the attention he was attracting and just went to sleep! Kim had made a fantastic cake for the occasion too.

Her mother, Diane, who had done much of the organising for the event, was quite taken aback when two rather special visitors unexpectedly dropped in to present her with something for all her hard work.
