Wear It Pink is one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events. Each year thousands of people across the UK wear pink and fundraise for Breast Cancer Now.
You, too, can do your bit and get involved. Wear it pink will take place on Friday, October 22, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The event is important as not only does it raise money, it also raises awareness.
Wear It Pink helps with world-class research
Television and radio personality Debbie McGee has reflected on her own very personal experience to encourage people to support Breast Cancer Now by wearing pink.
The vital funds raised helps the charity’s world-class research and life-changing care.
The “Strictly Come Dancing” contestant revealed in a filmed conversation with a Breast Cancer Now nurse that she was alone when she was diagnosed just a week after the biopsy she’d had on her birthday.
Debbie said: “The first consultant offered me lots of different options and one was a full mastectomy. It was very scary, shocking. I was on my own. It really hits you.
“When I left, I can remember I got into the car and just burst into tears. It was just a complete and utter shock. I couldn’t believe what was happening to me.”
“It’s good to know you’re not the only one”
Debbie was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), an early form of breast cancer, after a routine mammogram in 2018.
Debbie said: “There were some little white specks that hadn’t been on previous mammograms. She said it might not be anything but because it wasn’t there before we need to follow it up with a biopsy. About a week later I got the results. The consultant said it’s DCIS and we need to do something about it.”
Debbie had surgery to remove the cancerous tissue in her left breast and has now recovered.
Debbie said, “It is good to hear other people’s stories. It is good to know you’re not the only one and also that they’ve gone through the same feelings as you.
“I could spend my days thinking ‘Well it might come back, and it might be worse.’ But I never, ever let myself think that. I’m living today, and whatever I have to deal with tomorrow, I will deal with tomorrow.”
Debbie is encouraging everyone to wear it pink for Breast Cancer Now on October 22. Register today at wearitpink.org
