Make Time for Turmeric

turmeric

This Eastern spice is creating some heat on social media, but is it worth the fuss?

The colourful root spice Turmeric is the latest superfood and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Although widely used as a curry spice powder and colourant, it’s root has stepped into the limelight recently thanks to Instagram.

Star turn of the Turmeric latte

The vibrant orange colour of the spice is a regular on Instagram, with influencers sharing their spicy lattes and smoothie bowls. But this is no one-hit wonder, the health benefits are said to have anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties.

Just like Garlic, Sweet Potatoes and Brocolli, Turmeric is justified with its superstar status and worth adding to your shopping list.

Anti-oxidants aplenty!

Any fruit or vegetable with colour is said to be full of anti-oxidants as they contain phytochemicals, yet Turmeric has an added extra. The root spice contains Curcumin, which gives it it’s vibrant yellow colour and is the vital part for promoting health. Many health capsules have extra curcumin added in to boost the health properties.

Make your own Turmeric latte

We like this foodie blog for a latte recipe where you add a teaspoon of nut butter for extra creaminess.

  • fresh turmeric 3cm piece, peeled (or 3/4 teaspoon turmeric powder)
  • fresh ginger 2cm piece, peeled (or ¼ – ½ teaspoon ground ginger)
  • honey 1 heaped teaspoon
  • almond, cashew nut or hazelnut butter 1 heaped tablespoon
  • water 1 ½ cups (or milk, for a creamier drink)
  • ground cinnamon ½ – ¾ teaspoon
  • vanilla essence or extract 1 teaspoon
  • salt good pinch of

Pop all ingrdients into a blender, warm in a small pot or microwave when ready, and pour into two mugs!

What about you, do you like Turmeric? We’d love to know what you use it for and if you have found the health properties to be true.
