It seems the old adage of “breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper” really does ring true, as long as your paltry evening meal is washed up and put away by eight p.m.

Scientists in Chile have found that people who eat late typically have waist measurements two inches bigger than those who eat earlier.

They believe we evolved to use up energy during daylight hours, producing all the correct appetite enzymes and hormones, but our body mechanisms slow down as night draws in and we get ready to sleep.
