A headache really is a ‘headache’, so can you cure it naturally?
Last week, after all the preparation for guests coming, I was left with a headache/migraine, and wondered if I could cure it naturally.
Having suffered from a migraine and its lesser-known cousin, Migraine Aura, for years, I am quick to take a painkiller to stop a migraine in its tracks. However, it’s not the first time I have wondered what natural remedies there might be.
Surely there had to be a ‘fix-all’ cure out there?
With Google as my aide, I found myself in all corners of the world (via my laptop), discovering cures. I wanted to know old wives tales. I wanted the weird and wonderful.
I thought it was only fair to turn my research into a post for our dear “Friend” readers. Perhaps, if a headache strikes again, we might find one of these useful?
Peppermint Oil
This is definitely a natural remedy I can agree on, as I have the first-hand experience of this working. I was sent a Mygrastick’s years ago by a PR to try out for migraine relief. I have to say it worked every time I used it. Sadly it was so tiny I eventually lost it, but not before having years of migraine relief. The cooling effect of the oil applied to my temples and across my forehead was soothing.
The smell, too, was calming, and when applied to my forehead and I had a lie down in a darkened room, I was soon back up and about, migraine free. I can definitely advocate this as a relief.
Citrus fruit
Citrus fruits contain Vitamin C and are full of antioxidants so make a great migraine cure. Apparently cutting a lime in half and rubbing it on your forehead is said to relieve symptoms of a migraine. Eating an orange and drinking a glass of water is also said to be a cure.
While I’m yet to try this out, I could imagine the cooling sensation of fresh lime, as well as the scent, would be helpful. A freshly cut orange, too, is simply divine so perhaps it would help to focus your brain on positives, too?
Butterbur
This herb has been used since the middle ages in Europe to cure a range of ailments. Butterbur is said to treat all kinds of ailments including tummy aches, fevers, coughs, IBS, stomach ulcers, UTI, asthma, and hayfever.
While the medicinal properties of Butterbur have not be discredited, it is always wise to do your research well and check with your doctor or health practitioner if you are considering taking it.
Botox
Did you know botox is an FDA approved cure? Yes, since 2010, this has been on the list to prevent migraines. If you are a chronic migraine sufferer, you might be eligible for Botox treatment for a migraine on the NHS.
It is thought that the muscles relaxing abilities of Botox help the flow of blood pressure in muscles that cause a migraine. It is also thought it might stop nerves sending pain signals and signals that a migraine is imminent.
