Covid has changed the way we use our GP service. Many of us are reluctant to bother busy doctors. However, everyone should be aware of possible signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer and don’t hesitate to book a GP appointment if you’re worried. Above all, don’t let embarrassment hold you back from seeking medical advice.

Our health writer, Jackie Mitchell, finds out more about ovarian cancer in particular in our October 8 issue of “The People’s Friend”. She speaks to Marie-Claire Platt, Head of Public Affairs and Research at Ovarian Cancer Action. And Marie-Claire provides information on possible signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.

Be Aware Of The Possible Signs And Symptoms Of Ovarian Cancer

  • Stomach pain and bloating
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling full quickly when eating
  • Weight loss
  • Needing to wee more frequently
  • Back pain
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Extreme fatigue

The NHS and cancer charities say it remains vital to contact your GP promptly about warning signs.

And it’s wise to take up any tests or screenings that are offered, such as smear or bowel tests. This is because these tests are designed to pick up early signs of cancer in people who are not showing any symptoms. And you can check what screenings are available in various areas of the UK at cancerresearchuk.org.

It’s also wise to regularly check your breasts for any unusual lumps or other signs, and details of how to do this can be found here.

Cancer treatments are improving all the time and the sooner cancer is caught the easier it is to treat.

More information about ovarian cancer can be found here. While there’s lots more information and advice about the five gynaecological cancers, in particular, at eveappeal.org.uk. And Cancer Research UK gives a guide to signs and symptoms of various other cancers, here.
