Readers of this Editor’s Diary know how much I love my garden. And even though autumn is approaching, it’s still looking pretty good!
For a few weeks, I have been keeping an eye on a plant growing between my apple tree and gooseberry bush. I didn’t plant it myself, so it’s most probably self-seeded. Or perhaps a helpful bird gave it a helping hand!
Anyway, I was curious to see what developed. And imagine my delight when it turned out to be a sunflower! It gives a glorious burst of colour to the top of the garden.
That unexpected flower has really cheered me up. Although autumn is a lovely season, it also means winter isn’t far away. And I am not a fan of the dark and the cold! Winters on Scotland’s east coast can be harsh and long.
But even though winter is on its way, it’s still late summer, teetering on the brink of autumn. And that brings lots of beauty of its own.
The other morning, it had been raining when I popped out to the garden. The raindrops had fallen on to cobwebs in the rockery and were sparkling there like jewels.
It was so incredibly beautiful that I dashed back in for my phone and took a picture before the heat of the sun evaporated them.
Another benefit of being an early riser!
