Crochet A Poppy Brooch

Two poppies, one pink, one red, worked using our free crochet pattern

With Remembrance Day approaching, this delicate, crocheted poppy design could be pinned on to coats and tops to mark the occasion, or can be worn all year round as a pretty accessory. By using a fine thread, the petals of this dainty poppy feel almost as delicate as the real thing, or work it in a thicker thread for a more compact, sturdier design.

This delicate design uses long crochet stitches and very fine thread to form the papery quality of poppy petals. The yellow centre is filled with a tiny amount of stuffing, and the black cotton thread surrounding it is folded back on itself and stitched in place.

With 0.75mm hook and A, make 4 ch and join with a sl st to the first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: 3 ch, 10 tr into ring, sl st to 3rd of 3 ch with B and carry A on WS of work (11 sts).

Rounds 2–3: 3 ch, 1 tr in next 10 tr, sl st to 3rd of 3 ch.

Continue with A.

Round 4 (inc): 3 ch, 1 tr in same st, (tr2inc) 10 times, sl st to 3rd of 3 ch (22 sts).

Rounds 5–9: 3 ch, (to count as first tr), 1 tr in each tr, sl st to 3rd of 3 ch.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail of A and B. Stuff the yellow-green centre piece. Weave the tail of B around the lower edges of the centre piece, between rounds 3 and 4, pull tightly on the thread to gather the stitches and fasten off.

Weave the tail of A through the last round of stitches, pull tightly on the thread to close the opening and fasten off. Push the yellow centre inside the surrounding black section. Sew the sections in place, working the stitches right through from the base to the top of the yellow centre. Pliers may come in handy here to help coax the needle through the stuffed piece.
