Enid Blyton books blazed through my childhood as colourful, exciting lands and people to visit whenever I felt like it. The Magic Faraway Tree series was pure fantasy escapism; the Famous Five and Five Find-outers fun, aspirational adventure; the Malory Towers and St Clare stories a glimpse of how the other half lived.
Enid Blyton was ridiculously prolific and she has something for everyone, from fairy tales to adventure stories. I credit her with my love of reading and with my desire to write, as her books fired my imagination and made me want to create characters and worlds like hers.
There couldn’t be a better gift to give a kid than an introduction to George and Timmy, Bets and Fatty or Silky and Moon-face – friends to last a lifetime!
