On the journey from Fife into Edinburgh, I’m always delighted when the “sails” of the Queensferry Crossing come into sight. It’s such a beautiful, sleek structure that seems to be perfectly at one with its surroundings.
But did you know the trio of bridges spanning the Forth provide the only location in the world where transport bridges have been built in the same location in each of the last three centuries?
The Rail Bridge was constructed in 1890. More than 70 years later, the Forth Road Bridge was built in 1964. Finally, of course, 53 years on, the Queensferry Crossing was completed in 2017. And what could be more fitting than a new tartan to celebrate? That’s exactly what Transport Scotland has recently commissioned to mark this achievement.
