As you may know, the “Friend” staff have recently been delving into the Archives capturing life through the eyes of “The People’s Friend” over the last 150 years, all culminating in our “Special Collector’s Edition”, made especially to celebrate our magical milestone.
I love learning about life in a different era and had a personal surprise this week when my father, a baker to trade, was clearing out the loft and came upon his Dundee Trades College book of recipes going back to 1954.
Following In Footsteps
Looking through the book gave me a snapshot of his time as a young man following in the footsteps of two generations of bakers before him, and I can clearly recall a childhood memory of him using our marble kitchen table to make scone mix – with no bowl or scales required!
Surprisingly, perhaps, I’m not really one for baking, but I’ll definitely be trying to recreate some of those recipes from the well-worn book as they all sound delicious.
I may save my baked efforts for when the Special Collector’s Edition is out. I can’t think of a better way to savour the flavour of it all than over a cup of tea and cake.
