If there’s one thing that’s my weakness, it’s good shortbread!
I’m not sure where my obsession with shortbread started, perhaps as a child? Being given that buttery biscuit for the first time, my mother looking proudly on as we ate the fruits of her homeland.
Being a Scot living in London, my mum didn’t often have access in the 80’s to what we children considered “Scottish Food”. Sure, local shops sold shortbread, but not the kind that our aunts and uncles would bring back from Edinburgh.
Bountiful car boot surprises
When aunts and uncles returned from Edinburgh, they came laden with a bounty. Square sausage! Circular bacon! Shortbread like no other! A rock sweet that was soft! Sponges wrapped in coconut icing! A fruit pudding that you could eat for breakfast! To a young child, very concerned with their sweet intake, their visits and gifts were heavenly.
Whether it was the romance of a foreign country, or simply that divine taste as the butter melted, and the biscuit crumbled in your mouth, I’m not sure. But what I was sure about, shortbread and I were going to be firm friends.
Coffee and a biscuit
I love nothing more than a hot coffee, and a firm shortbread biscuit – Ahhhh! So when I saw the Royal Wedding souvenir shortbread tin of HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, I couldn’t resist.
