Poet Of The Week: Iris Hesselden

We are delighted to have “Friend” poetry favourite, Iris Hesselden as our Poet Of The Week. Iris’s poem “Only One You” appears in this week’s issue.

Hello, Iris. What do you enjoy most about writing poetry?

I find it relaxing. I can switch off from everyday problems.

What encouraged you to submit your first poem to “The People’s Friend”?

My poems were first in “The Friendship Book” and “The Fireside Book” and “This England”. It went on from there that they were then published in “The People’s Friend” magazine.

Your poems are full of positivity and encouragement. Is it important to you that readers feel uplifted and inspired when they finish reading your poems?

People need upliftment and a little encouragement, especially in these days!

Lots of your poems are about the natural world. What time of year do you find most inspiring?

Spring and autumn are the most inspiring seasons for me.

Do you write when ideas strike, or do you have a writing routine?

I find that ideas plant a seed and then I write later, and inspiration comes.

Do you have a favourite poem? What is it, and why?

My favourite poem is by Robert Frost, ‘Two roads diverged in a wood….’I feel that it applies to me.

What is your advice for poets who are just starting out and would like to be published?

To anyone starting out, I would say, Don’t give up and don’t get discouraged. I had at least 30 rejections before my poems were accepted.

Where can readers find more of your poetry?

I have 3 books available at a cost of £5 each including p&p and some prayer cards @ £1 each. They are available from my daughter Sarah Ashcroft. You can email her at sizzlehesselden@gmail.com for more information.
