I am lucky enough to live in a part of Scotland famous for its plums.
Every year, generous neighbours keep me well supplied with their surplus fruit, and this year has been no exception. Thanks to the weather we’ve had, it has been a bumper year for plums, and they are more delicious than ever.
When my neighbour left an entire black bucket full of ripe fruit on my doorstep, I was delighted.
I knew exactly what I would make first – this Gingery Plum Cake from a BBC Good Food recipe.
I’ve made it more times than I can count, and it always turns out consistently well. It is certainly not for the calorie conscious, though! But I console myself with the thought that I only make it for the short time plums are in season, so it doesn’t matter too much that it is laden with butter, sugar and golden syrup.
It is delicious accompanied by a cup of tea, but if you are feeling extra decadent, warm it through slightly and serve with a dollop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Bliss!
